6. With the midship line firmly secured, step ashore and cleat the usual docklines. (The looped midship line is not necessarily secure so don’t rely on it for very long. If the loop comes free, your boat could leave without you.)
DOCKING BETWEEN BOATS A dock can be a busy place. You may not have the luxury of an entire dock to yourself. Instead, you may need to pull in ahead of, behind, or between other boats.
If you are docking behind another boat, your first priority is to tie an after bow spring line to prevent a collision with the other boat. You can use the same technique shown on page 74 for virtually all wind conditions.
If you are docking ahead of another boat, or between boats ahead and astern, you will use a variation of the same technique, as outlined here:
1. To clear the other boats, you’ll approach the dock at a relatively steep angle—as much as 40 to 60°. Use no more power than is necessary to maintain steerage; shift into neutral as much as possible.
3. Aim the bow slightly forward of the midpoint of the available space.
4. Begin a turn to starboard to present your port bow to the dock.
5. With your target now about two-thirds of the way forward in the available space, make sure the stern will clear the boat astern.
6. As the port bow makes contact with the dock, shift into neutral, and hand an after bow spring line to a dockhand, or have a crew member step off with the line and secure it to a cleat on the dock aft of the bow.
